The Weepies: American Indie Duo
Indiscreet
November 23, 2009

American indie duo The Weepies is getting more and more inseparable from success.

They started as separate pop folk music acts. All that changed, when Steve Tannen crossed paths with Deb Talan in a bar in Massachusetts.

Suddenly, they weren’t separate anymore. In fact, they were so inseparable, they became a musical duo specializing in homemade music. They called themselves The Weepies. Forlorn as their name seemed, their coupled bliss otherwise shone through with their debut album title – Happiness.

But it was their sophomore album, entitled Say I am You, that made them inseparable from iPod track lists as well. The album reached #1 on iTunes’ list of most-downloaded folk albums in eight countries. Alongside this, ‘World Spins Madly On,’ a single from the said album, hit #1 on iTunes' USA folk song charts.

Their fan base and popularity continuously grew as their singles began to be featured in high-rating shows like Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Everwood, Kyle XY and How I Met Your Mother. The added exposure gave them celebrity followers as well. In 2007, Mandy Moore professed her undying fandom for the duo and got them to collaborate with her on her album
Wild Hope.

And the windfall just kept coming. The couple’s songs were featured in the movie Sex and the City. Their songs were also picked up by retailers JC Penney and Old Navy. Soon, even pop icon President Obama picked up the couple’s song ‘Can’t Go Back Now’for his election ad campaigns.

And to top it all off, Steve and Deb are all still undeniably, inseparably in love.
