Press Release:
Rock Out Japanese Style in a
Free J-Rock Concert
Specials
February 16, 2010
Prepare for some seriously fun punk-pop-rock performances in the 2010 Nihongo Fiesta when the legendary all-female Japanese band Shonen Knife rocks out with Philippines’ all-male dunk (dance and punk) band Pedicab in a free J-Rock concert. Capping off this year’s Nihongo Fiesta in Manila, which is presented by the Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM) and SM Supermalls’ SM Mall of Asia, the concert will be held on February 27, 2010, at MOA’s San Miguel by the Bay from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
Fresh from their US tour, Shonen Knife makes a stop in Manila to celebrate the Nihongo Fiesta with their uniquely Japanese but universally appealing and exuberant tunes. Their many beloved punk-pop hits, which include ‘Tomato Head,’ ‘Banana Chips,’ ‘It’s a New Find,’ and their distinct versions of ‘Top of the World’ and ‘Daydream Believer’ have established the award-winning band from Osaka, Japan with a worldwide cult following and a career spanning an incredible 29 years.
The influential Japanese trio - themselves, influenced by a diverse roster of pop groups from the 1960s and early punk rock acts from the 70s -even made massive fans out of alternative rock bands such as Sonic Youth and Nirvana; the latter even inviting them to go on tour in the early 90s. The late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain went on to describe his experience of watching Shonen Knife live as being “transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old girl at a Beatles concert.”
Expect even more lively hysteria in the J-Rock concert as popular Filipino band Pedicab - with their equally infectious songs and energetic performances that will move you to dance - join Shonen Knife. Both bands’ unique sounds are guaranteed to finish the 2010 Nihongo Fiesta in high spirits.
Furthermore, in line with the festival’s goal of promoting cultural and arts exchange between Japan and the Philippines, it will also include a Nihongo speech contest, quiz bee, and a Japanese and Filipino street fashion exhibit and contest that’s not to be missed.
The J-Rock concert and all 2010 Nihongo Fiesta events are open to the public. For inquiries, contact JFM at (02) 811-6155 or email@jfmo.org.ph.
