Things women need to learn about love and music (and the effect of the latter on the former)

In the ears of the heartbroken, every lovelorn song seems to be made of lyrical and musical genius. Every phrase and chorus is a prayer tearfully recited, with their respective authors deemed sympathetic demigods deserving of worship and iPod space.

And Little Boots (real name Victoria Hesketh) is this flock’s newest deity. The 25-year-old from Blackpool tried to become Pop’s new queen two times before – once as a Pop Idol contestant and once more as the lead singer of the band Dead Disco. The third time proved to be the charm when she gained popularity as a Youtube star. Barely months after posting videos of herself, people were talking about her singles ‘Mathematics’ and ‘Stuck on Repeat,’ and clamoring for her album, Hands - an album filled with songs whose lyrics can make any dumpee finish a whole grocery shelf of Kleenex within the span of two tracks.

Even with eyes red, noses chapped, and chests heaving, Little Boots fans keep her music on repeat. It could be because her heart–ripping lyrics are all set to the most bubblegum of electronic pop melodies. Each hook, though achingly sharp, is addicting. Take this line from the song ‘Every Little Earthquake’:

Victoria Hesketh, a.k.a. Little Boots, makes every lovelorn song seem to be made of lyrical and musical genius

‘I can remember days things weren't always this way, I used to make you smile if only for a while, but now you can't get through.’ Who, upon reading this line, would think they’d be compelled to shimmy to it in a flapper dress and stilettos once it’s set to music?

But with the power of Little Boots, shimmy to it you will - just as UK, Australia, and Japan have. Shimmy to it you will despite your heart imploding. Shimmy, jiggy, and disco to it you will, having the grandest time doing so though your life as you know it crumbles before your eyes.

This power is precisely why the broken-hearted, hips undulating in admiration, will continue to flock towards her. Because in the presence of this chart-topping diva’s music, your ex’s voice saying, ‘It’s not you, it’s me’ ceases to be your LSS. Instead, it is her high-pitched synthesized voice you won’t be able to shake off your memory. And Little Boots telling you:

‘I've found the antidote
Music is the cure
So you can try to paralyze
But I know best this time

No more poison

Killing my emotion
I will not be frozen
Dancing is my remedy, remedy, oh.’

So dance. Dance until your heart no longer pines for your ex, but yearns instead for this pop goddess’ newest single.
