No two female American singers have ever looked so confusingly alike - especially two who don't even share a drop of blood. But there is no denying that Zooey Deschanel and Katy Perry are doppelgangers of each other. Both doe-eyed, both brunette, both with a penchant for vintage outfits and penning songs you can't seem to get out of your head.
Zooey has been on our radar for far longer. We came to know her for supporting roles in ‘Elf’ and ‘The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.’ She is a critic's darling, with publications such as The New York Times touting her as one of Hollywood's most sought-after young actresses. She has, however, been dabbling in music since the start of her career - one of her first efforts being in a jazz act called If All the Stars Were Pretty Babies that she formed with fellow actress Samantha Shelton. Despite touring LA together, the act never produced an album or released any singles. So for the general public, Zooey remained an acting ingenue.
Katy broke into the scene as a gospel singer in 2001, but the good girl exterior was very soon shed as Katy began to sing secular music. In 2006 and 2007, she finally got the attention of Internet listeners and Blender magazine for the song ‘Ur So Gay.’ In 2008, Katy became Billboard's newest muse upon release of the infamous single, ‘I Kissed A Girl and I Liked It.’ Since then, her album One of the Boys has become a worldwide hit, and garnered her both nominations and accolades from bodies like the MTV Video Music Awards and the Grammy Awards.
Quite obviously, the similarities of the women end with looks. |

Zooey seems to put a lot of effort in remaining indie. Once in a while, she dabbles in more commercial endeavors, but never in anything that would push her into the epicenter of fame - ironic, because it is this aloofness that keeps her famous. Katy, on the other hand, seems poised for in-your-face world domination. She knows she has fans in more than 30 countries around the globe, and from interviews, one can infer that she plans to grow this base. She is sassy and colorful and, without a doubt, well-known.
These differences are highlighted by the music they make:
She and Him - Zooey's latest musical collaboration with M. Ward feels like Danish pastry. It is soft and pleasant and perfect for tea in a rose-filled garden. The influences are decidedly old and worn and romantic - precisely the music you'd expect from a woman who wears ribbons in her hair.
One of the Boys - Katy Perry's most famous album to date is more caramel popcorn than anything else - it's loud and crunchy and sticky. The album nods to Cher and Pink and Gwen. Though the outfits may suggest slow and sultry, Katy's sex appeal is in how aggressively she takes to the stage.

They say there is no point comparing apples to oranges (or, in this case, pastries to popcorn) but this is the Rival Riffs section and there must be an attempt at annihilating one of these female American singers. So since this comparison was born from their looks, let the comparison end there as well. When the Internet and the press started fueling rumors that she Katy were twins, Zooey had this to say: "It's a little bit annoying, to be totally blunt..." And I say, she who bitches loses the game.
This round goes to Katy.
